NEWS ROUND UP (May 2009)

Needless to say news reports world wide have been overtaken by updates of the swine flu situation. The latest closures have now been in schools where pupils have been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus. Five schools have been closed, three in London, one in Devon and one in south Gloucestershire, after pupils fell ill. This triggers worries that students may have to sit exams in quarantine. All parents are advised to follow the guidelines at The Health Protection Agency (http://www.hpa.org.uk)

On other front we have been reading reports that parents in England could get the power to force councils to improve the quality of local schools under new plans to be announced by Gordon Brown. The proposals would allow parents to demand action at a school even if their children were not pupils. Currently, worried parents can trigger an inquiry by the schools inspector Ofsted, but only the government can compel councils to act.

The Telegraph on the other hand, leads with the headline that thousands of children to miss out on primary school choice in recession. It states that competition is so intense that many families will have to accept their second, third or even fourth choice school, possibly several miles from home. Some four and five year-olds could be left without any place for September. Almost a third of councils across England surveyed by The Daily Telegraph were struggling to cope with demand, with many forced to create more places by building temporary classrooms.

Certainly a great deal to read and follow so watch this space!
